Part of the mission of the Asylum Hill Research Consortium is to give voice to those whose lives were not properly acknowledged or commemorated at a time when mentally ill patients were often marginalized and forgotten.

From the beginning of the project, UMMC has been committed to creating an appropriate memorial to honor those buried here. Even though the people buried on this campus were never patients at this hospital, UMMC is committed to be good stewards of these patients’ new-found place in Mississippi’s history.

Preliminary plans discussed include the creation of a memorial ossuary, a structure located on the UMMC campus, where the bones will be placed and which will include an educational component about life at the Mississippi State Hospital for the Insane between 1855 and 1935.

In addition to the memorial structure, the Consortium has also discussed a possible memorial garden.
