Resources for Descendants

Mississippi Department of Archives and History

The Mississippi Department of Archives and History has a database of death records between 1912 and 1935, compiled by volunteer Nan Harvey, of those who died at the asylum and whose death certificate indicates they were buried on the grounds. They are searchable by name and county from which they were sent to the asylum as well as by death certificate number. When searching the database, please be aware that there are many variations in spellings in the original documents. In addition, handwriting on the original documents is not always clear, so if you are searching for a specific name, try various possible spellings for best results.

The Mississippi Department of Archives and History also has additional records about the asylum which are available in-house, including annual reports, account books and patient registers. Digital or online versions of these records are not yet available.
